Chapter Eight

Krash

We finished our meal, the server female removed the dirty plates, and Barb and Cyan excused themselves to go to the restroom. I used to wonder why so many public huts had sleeping rooms; later I’d learned they were for elimination, but for some reason I had yet to discern, females went there in pairs or groups.

Kord and I swapped stories of our lives on Dakon while waiting for the females, but then he said, “They might not come back right away. Perhaps you should begin and tell me why you came.”

“All right.” I nodded and collected my thoughts. “You’ve been away for a while, so you may not be aware how many men have left Dakon.” I glanced at the hall leading to the restrooms. What was taking Cyan so long? “The, uh, population is declining rapidly.”

“We’ve been getting a lot of Dakonians in the restaurant.”

“If unstopped, the emigration will have irreversible repercussions.” My horns itched, and my skin tingled with anticipation…of what?

I paused. Waiting, waiting. What was I waiting for? Why did I have the feeling I teetered on the verge of something profound? I glanced toward the hall again.

Enoki had estimated three months might be required to contact all the men, but I intended to complete my mission before the next vessel departed for Dakon in about a month.

I rubbed my mouth with my hand; I could still recall the sensation of Cyan’s lips, had relived it throughout the meal as I watched her eat. Fates help me, I wanted to mesh mouths again, more so now that she believed me. We’d kissed in anger; what would it be like to kiss with only desire between us, to surrender to it and not rein it in?

My chest tightened as I contemplated returning home where I belonged. I’ll never see her again.

The next ship doesn’t leave for a month. I don’t need to worry about that until then.

Would I even see her between now and then? She’d accompanied me to Your Just Desserts and Barbie Q’s because she had doubts. She had the answers now.

Kord made nonsensical noises at his kit. She resembled both him and Barb. The two of them had produced a handsome child. Her face aglow, the little female smiled at him like he was the sum total of her entire world.

Like my kit would look at me. Cyan and I could have beautiful—

Cyan? What? No, not Cyan. Not anybody.

I’d always assumed if I had kits, they would be Vetha’s and now, try as I might, I could hardly conjure her countenance—my mind superimposed an image of Cyan, her curly hair, her blue eyes, that pink mouth, her soft, curvy form. Our kits would resemble me and her. Because of her, they would be beautiful.

No kits. Not with her. Banish the thought.

I dug my fingers into my knee and focused harder on my mission. “Enoki sent me to request you come back to Dakon. We’re asking for your help to save our people, save our civilization.
